The Party Scene. Last Wednesday night, the Writing Center at Hunter College celebrated its 3rd Anniversary with a dinner at Doubles, the private club in the Sherry Netherland.

The Writing Center is the baby of a guy named Lewis Frumkes, a writer, editor and promoter of the art of writing. The Center is a “school.” It’s the kind of thing you might expect to find at a great university but no university is great enough to compare with the University of Little Ole New York – and in Lewis Frumkes’ case, with a landing strip called Hunter College.

Lewis has also been an acknowledger of and encourager to this writer. I was invited to this party and even got a call from Lewis about attending or attending the cocktail. I said I’d come no matter what my sked was like, partly because they were honoring Linda Fairstein, another esteemed friend I’ve made in these canyons of Manhattan. Linda is a hardworking writer – turns out a crime novel once a year – and does everything with good cheer and all around hail-fellow-well-met.

On the night of the party, I skipped the cocktail hour since I can put that time to other use (like putting tomorrow’s together).

So, I got out of the house just minutes before dinner was supposed to start at 8:30. Friends aside, I look at this sort of evening as an assignment. There is something to tell about. Get pictures, get the message to convey.

The Glad Girls: Joan Jakobson, Helen Handley Houghton, Barbara Ascher, Anne Wazelle, and Jeannette Watson. The Glad Girls are the Park Avenue version of the Supremes goes The Chordettes (you had to be there); and they can rock!

As it happened I arrived about 8:50, and naturally the evening had begun, as well as the dinner itself. However. The young woman at the receptionist desk had the Guest List and it didn’t have my name on it. Nor was there a place card awaiting my arrival.

There was something missing in all of this. It could well have been my acceptance. It could well have been that I never actually made it but just thought I’d made it. This happens frequently with me. I tend to analyze these inactions about myself. With this I came up with two possibilities: I’d rather lie down and take a nap; or, I’m losing my mind. Lets hope it's the former.

However, I knew I’d have a good time at this dinner. Jennifer Raab the President of Hunter always brings out the kid in me. I like to kid her. She has a big sense of humor and she’s one of those Indefatigables that you can often meet in New York. We met several years ago in Abu Dhabi, along with her husband Michael Goodwin who writes for the New York Post. A Postian political commentary. The only reason we aren’t best of friends (as far as I’m concerned) is because: Who has time?

Another guest, Daphne Merkin is a new acquaintance but one of those acquaintances where you could become lifelong friends if you had another life to go with the one you’ve got (at this age). Daphne is a distinguished writer in the New York literary community besides her audience in the New Yorker and other current periodicals. She’s effortlessly fascinating to talk to. For me anyway. She also teaches a Writing Workshop at the Writing Center. It’s an “intensive Master Class in the art of writing a memoir.” Intensive, Master, Art and Writing are all you need to know about Dahpne. Not finding anything, the woman at the reception desk said she'd just seat me. There were a few unclaimed name cards on the desk and obviously an extra plate. But it was too late and frankly, I would have been embarrassed walking in at that hour, even though I’m sure I would have felt welcome; that is the nature of the hosts.

So I went home. And that was good too.

Last Week was St. Patrick’s, as everyone in New York knows unless they’d left town. There were numerous parties, and of course the parade and what me mither always referred to as the “folderol” that happens afterwards at bars and bars and bars across town. My father was a Brooklyn born Irishman transplanted to New England around his fortieth year – a matter of great misfortune in many ways to a Brooklyn born Irishman. You can take the boy out of, etc., but ...

He was born at the very beginning of the last century and his parents had come over in the early to mid-'80s, so there was a bit of a brogue in his Brooklyn accent (which is unlike the common Brooklynese today). He did not drink – never touched the stuff/one lesson learned early in his life – but he had an Irish temper also. Horrible. Violent. Noisy. I have sort of one, but not like his (thank God). However, I don’t have the issues he had. That was his gift to me. Also thank God. Nevertheless, it’s true about the Apple Falling From the Tree.

St. Patrick’s Day. Back up in New England growing up, people wore something green. End of Story. I don’t ever recall my Irish father getting into it – even the wearing of the green. You didn’t have to wear anything to show you were Irish. You just were. Irish was serious; always would be. It’s the poetry remember.

But those were the days when Americans lived differently (at least in a small New England town). And there was a different attitude in the land. These days, in New York, in the post-Modern Age, in the Land of the Kardashia and Hedge Fund Billionaires, it’s another chance to party like there’s no tomorrow, or at least tomorrow morning. It is funny to see ... sometimes ... but otherwise I’d rather be home with a good book.

That said, there are other ways of approaching this very Irish holiday in New York (noise, maestro please). Some people have civilized St. Paddy’s Day parties and they do it for the fun of it. In the crowd I’m referring to in these pictures below, they do it so people can enjoy the chance to get together at a good old fashioned cocktail party on Park Avenue seeing old friends, familiar faces, neighbors, New York nightlife compatriots. I didn’t make this party although the host and hostess were kind enough to invite me. After hearing my rap on what I think of St. Patrick’s Day, you get the picture; I’m a seasoned grouch.

Nevertheless, palaver aside, last Thursday night, Jean and Martin Shafiroff hosted a party at their New York home to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. You know Jean, don’t you? If you don’t, you haven't been looking at NYSD Party Pictures (that’s okay, there will be more). Martin is her congenial investment banker husband who can almost keep up with his wife.

On this past snowy, slippery late Monday afternoon down at Swifty's, on East 73rd Street and Lexington, a group of friends celebrated the Art opening of an exhibition of paintings by Cuban born artist Ana Guerra. Guerra's painterly expressions of glazed color and layered surfaces on panel brought warmth to a drab winter dusk. So did the mouthwatering Cuban hors d'oeuvres.

I saw the paintings at dinner there Monday night. They’re very affecting and add another dimension of interest to the atmosphere of the room. That last sentence sounds like some pompous, supercilious would-be ham art critic. Well, if the shoes fits ...

The Randall's Island Park Alliance hosted its Fielding Dreams NYC Gala at the American Museum of Natural History

The Randall's Island Park Alliance hosted its Fielding Dreams NYC Gala on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at the American Museum of Natural History to honor two influential community leaders and celebrate the continued success of Randall's Island Park, a world‐class destination for sports, recreation and environmental exploration dedicated to championing healthy lifestyles for New York City Children. The event raised a record‐breaking $1 million for RIPA. This year, the Alliance honored Stacy Bash‐Polley, Partner at Goldman Sachs, and New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz for their commitment to Randall's Island Park and bettering children's lives in New York City.

The evening hosted a high‐profile crowd of nearly 600 philanthropists, City officials, and leaders in sports, health, and finance industries, all of whom are passionate about Randall's Island as the key to providing New York City's children with innovative and comprehensive opportunities for outdoor sports and recreation. The evening was co‐Chaired by RIPA Trustees Michael Boxer, Mark Greene and Richard Mack.

The dinner concluded with an auction with renowned auctioneer Sara Friedlander, of Christie's. The most coveted item sold was a Giants/Victor Cruz Experience package that includes a meet-and-greet with the wide receiver and tickets to the game.

Founded in 1992, RIPA, formerly Randall's Island Sports Foundation, Inc., provides free programs to thousands of children annually, working in close partnership with more than 120 local public schools and community‐based organizations in Harlem and the South Bronx – communities with some of the nation's highest rates of obesity, asthma, and diabetes.

The sports fields project on Randall's Island Park began in 2007 to address the enormous demand for outdoor athletic facilities in New York City, a need that led RIPA, in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, to reconfigure and reconstruct deteriorating ball fields. The fields were a final component of a larger island-wide plan to revitalize the park, which also has led to the construction of Icahn Stadium track & field complex in 2005, the Sportime tennis center in 2009, wetlands restoration and miles of waterfront pathways. Based on its 2012 Strategic Plan, the Alliance is now working to complete final renovations at the Park and to provide increasingly innovative and comprehensive public programming of the Island's remarkable new resources.

The Randall's Island Park Alliance, Inc. FACES (Finding A Cure For Epilepsy and Seizures) at NYU Langone Medical Center held its annual gala on Tuesday, March 5th, at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers, honoring prominent lawyer, author, broadcaster and philanthropist Leon Charney, raising over $4.5 million. Leon and his wife Tzili Charney also served as the evening's Chairs. Seth Meyers of Saturday Night Live fame lent his incredible talent as emcee. Journalist, author and public speaker, Susannah Cahalan was guest speaker. Sotheby's was represented by auction chair, Roger Erickson and Jamie Ritchie, who pounded the gavel as auctioneer.

Alfonso Kimche is a founding principal at North Hill Capital Management LLC, a private lender established in 2005 that provides commercial real estate bridge loans nationwide. During his real estate career, which began in 1990, Kimche has been involved with transactions in a wide range of asset classes, including mid-rise condominium, multifamily, industrial, office, and residential single family. A long time donor to UJA-Federation of New York, he has served on many event committees, including the REX Steering Committee, has joined several UJA-Federation missions abroad, and has recruited new members to the REX group.

Last week at Doubles, Peter Cotton Tail greeted each child giving them pink, yellow and lilac bunny ears. Tables were decorated with Easter baskets, coloring books and crayons, and a white picket fence 'guarded' the 1,300 candy-filled plastic eggs covering the astro turf carpeting. The Club's guiding light Wendy Carduner made sure every child was entertained with three face painters, a balloon artist, DJ, two MCs, and three dancers.

The Museum of Arts and Design held an opening gala on the evening of Monday, March 18 at 2 Columbus Circle, to celebrate three new exhibitions: After the Museum: The Home Front 2013, Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft and Design, and Wear It or Not: Recent Jewelry Acquisitions. Curators, artists, and many eminent members of the art and design world, gathered in the galleries to celebrate the artists and curators involved in these exhibitions.

On view through June 9, After the Museum stages and presents a series of installations and public programs, which explores the role of the 21st century art and design museum in shaping and echoing contemporary design practices. More than 30 designers and collaboratives are brought together for this exhibition to examine the interplay between cultural institutions and the design community.

Featuring nearly 90 installations, sculptures, furniture, and vessels, Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft and Design explores the latest conceptual and technical trends in woodworking today. The exhibition examines the ways in which artists, craftspeople and designers have incorporated modernist approaches and strategies into woodworking. Against the Grain is on view through September 15.

Last Monday night the Asia Society held its fifty annual Celebration of Asia Week benefit gala and honored designer Jason Wu.

The evening which was held at the Pierre, drew over 350 guests from the worlds of art, design and fashion. Ermenegildo Zegna was a Co-Chair for the evening and his fashion house was a lead corporate underwriter.

Guest Chefs Pichet Ong and Simpson Wong created a unique menu for the occasion. A live and spirited auction by Sotheby’s Vice Chairman, North America, Henry Howard-Sneyd, saw guests bidding on a number of items such as a made-to measure suit by Ermenegildo Zegna, and luxury travel and exclusive experiences.

On Thursday, March 21th, DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS 16th annual DINING BY DESIGN tour kicked-off with their annual GALA DINNER. This year, DIFFA honored two of their greatest supporters in Isabel & Ruben Toledo, famed designers and artists, as well as long time board member Rick Wolf. In a ceremony co-chaired by Geoffrey Zakarian and Tracy Resse, Isbael & Ruben Toldeo were awarded the annual Rockwell Service award by Rick Wolf and thanked everyone for bestowing them such a great honor. Rick Wolf received the Unsung Hero Award, presented by Cindy Allen, for raising 1.5 million for the organization. Cindy Allen went on to introduce and welcome DIFFA's new Executive Director, Felecia Webb.

The elegantly seated VIP dinner was accompanied by dancing and a silent auction loaded with hospitality experiences and luxury items. On Saturday, March 16, 2013, The Perlman Music Program (PMP) held its sixth annual concert and dinner at Kristy and Jim Clark’s beautiful Palm Beach home. Co-hosted by Emilia and Pepe Fanjul, and with over 150 Palm Beach arts lovers and philanthropists in attendance, the event honored Toby and Itzhak Perlman’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of classical music artists.

This special annual event is made possible through the Clarks’ profound generosity and dedication to The Perlman Music Program. “Something really special is happening at Toby and Itzhak’s camp,” said Jim Clark. “To help establish the new Arts Center and to host this event each year is truly an honor for us.”

The evening began with cocktails and champagne on the veranda, followed by a performance in the Clarks’ elegant living room featuring several outstanding PMP students and alumni. The concert included chamber music by Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms, presented by violinists Randall Goosby, Alice Ivy-Pemberton, Sean Lee, and Doori Na; violists Caitlin Lynch, Bella Markham, and Cong Wu; cellists Gabriel Beigel, Jia Kim, and SuJin Lee; and pianist Kwan Yi. The talented and poised young performers introduced each piece with a spirited tale, bringing each composer to life in their own words.

After the exceptional concert, Jim Clark spoke about the transformational experience of hearing Toby and Itzhak’s young artists flourish over his and Kristy’s years of involvement. He urged the guests to join him and Kristy in the campaign to fully fund a beautiful new performing arts center on PMP’s Shelter Island, NY campus. Opened in 2012, the landmark Kristy and James H. Clark Arts Center provides an essential year-round resource for PMP’s students and alumni. Jim announced that he and Kristy would personally match any of their guests’ donations towards the $3.5 million Clark Arts Center campaign, to a stirring round of applause. After Jim spoke, Toby Perlman thanked him and Kristy, Emilia and Pepe Fanjul, and PMP Board President, Morgan Stark, for helping PMP create the ideal environment to nurture gifted young musicians towards their full potential. To bring the evening to a rousing close, the guests toasted the incredible music and beautiful weather at a festive dinner under the stars.

On March 12, 2013, Le Cirque restaurant sponsored the Third Annual Fountain House Associates Spring Breakfast, entitled "Between The Sheets." Offering a woman's perspective on sex and mental health, the event featured speakers C. Neill Epperson, MD, Director of the Penn Center for Women's Behavioral Wellness and Shari Lusskin, MD, Founding Director of Reproductive Psychiatry at NYU Medical Center and NYU School of Medicine.

Over 100 attendees comprising the Fountain House Associates Committee, supporters of Fountain House and members of the media gathered at the restaurant to listen to the experts explore the science of sex and answer all the questions "you've always wanted to ask your mother, but never wanted to hear her answer." Among the topics discussed were age and sexual drive; medications that affect sexual behavior; and treatment options for common sexual dysfunctions.

Last Saturday afternoon in East Hampton, LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton held a screening of the award-winning documentary Growing Farmers,which highlights the Peconic Land Trust's work with the new generation of Long Island farmers, including their struggles and triumphs within the farming community. Produced by the Peconic Land Trust's Vice Chair Hilary Leff and director Michael Halsband, the film won the Audience Choice Award for Best Short at this past year's Hamptons International Film Festival.

A lively panel discussion followed the screening with Hilary and Michael, as well as local farmers featured in the film such as Ian Calder-Piedmont of Balsam Farms, and Scott Chaskey from Quail Hill Farm, which is situated in Amagansett on land that was donated to the Peconic Land Trust by Deborah Ann Light.

This past Thursday night, Bailey House held its 30th Anniversary Auction & Gala at Pier 60 at the Chelsea Piers, with more than 800 attending.

For more than a quarter century, Bailey House has been providing housing and support services to homeless men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS in New York City. Bailey House addresses the basic needs – housing, food, and safety. They also deliver support services including access to healthcare, counseling, support groups, and substance abuse treatment. The organization’s objective is to help their clients develop a sense of trust, community and stability so that they can create a future of their own making and “move beyond the crisis of diagnosis to leader productive and independent lives.”

Not much detail was spared about Frank Sinatra's obsession with Ava Gardner in a candid tell-all conversation with Lee Wolf and Steven Caras at the final of three Kravis Center Cultural Society ArtSmart Lunch & Learns held recently at the Weiner Banquet Center in the Kravis Center's Cohen Pavilion.

A film set the stage for "Fly Me to the Moon ... or Wherever Ava Is" and followed with a provocative discussion of the sultry affair between the crooner and the free-spirited actress. Over 400 Cultural Society members and guests escaped in the middle of a Monday and lived a bit vicariously through Sinatra and Gardner's tempestuous relationship.

Wolf and Caras examined this legendary tsunami of high drama, and equal doses of unbridled passion and violence that kept Hollywood gossip columns and fan magazines humming for years. For three explosive years, 1951 to 1953, the famous couple fueled headlines with their free-for- all affair, forever quarreling over politics, music and of course, lovers.

The luncheon concluded with a special surprise. Guests were treated to a rendition of a couple of Frank Sinatra favorites by Shawn Nevad, a student who was a participant at one of the Kravis Centers' ArtScholars dinners where Steven Caras was wowed with his impromptu performance. A senior at Santaluces High School, Shawn is currently a candidate for The Palm Beach Post Pathfinder Scholarship Award and the president of the award-winning and traveling Reflections Choir at his school. He has performed at the Kravis Center on several occasions with his high school choir and theater groups as well as in New York at Carnegie Hall with Sir John Rutter as part of a mass choir. He is a member of the select Musical Theater Group at school and is currently in rehearsal for "Seussical The Musical."

The Kravis Center's ArtScholars program gives high school students who have a strong interest in the performance arts (along with an economic need) greater insight into their particular discipline by attending dinner discussions with special guest speakers and personally meeting distinguished artists who perform on the Kravis Center stages.

American Friends of British Art recently celebrated its 10th anniversary at its annual Lecture & Luncheon held at the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach.

The guest speaker was Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, the international interior designer, author, (and eldest daughter of the 11th Duke of Marlborough).

The charity’s founder Dr. Michael Ridgdill introduced Lady Henrietta, who provided a visual presentation titled “The Life of the House; How Rooms Evolve,” which included photos and stories about her childhood home Blenheim Palace.

Last Thursday, designer Francesca Rappaport and her son marketing guru Errol Rappaport welcomed friends and committee members of the upcoming National Meningitis Association Give Kids a Shot Gala to an elegant cocktail reception in their art and antique filled aerie decorated by dear friend fashion icon Iris Apfel on Central Park South, with its expansive, breathtaking views of park as the backdrop.

Errol has long been a driving force behind the gala as his close friend GarySpringerands son Nick had been stricken by the vaccine preventable disease 14 years ago which cost him his legs and arms. Despite that trauma, Nick went on to captain the Para Olympic Gold Med winning rugby team at the Olympics in China. Both Gary and publisher Suzanna Bowling were effusive in their thanks to the Rappaports for opening their home for the cause.

As it was both Errol's and Judy Gilbert's birthday, actress Nora Davis sang several of their tunes to the pair, ending with a melt your heart rendition of "Somewhere, Over the Rainbow." Artist and writer Erica Lacombe, who catered the event, presented Errol with a charcoal portrait of him and his beloved mother which followed by a lusty round of "Happy Birthday" to the celebrants.

On April 8th, The Opportunity Network held its 10th Anniversary gala at Cipriani Wall Street honoring venture capitalist Alan Patricof and news anchor Soledad O'Brien.

The Opportunity Network creates access for high-achieving, low income high school students to competitive colleges, and onto career opportunities and professional networks. It was created ten years ago by Brian Weinstein (now head of the corporate finance group at Creative Artists Agency and Jessica Pliska, The Opportunity Network's executive director. The program follows 10th graders through college and onto great careers, offering guidance, internships and training in everything from how to shake hands to delivering an "elevator pitch." The organization works with students at 91 public high schools in New York City.

On April 9th, Trees New York (TreesNY) held its 2013 Street Tree Award Benefit in honor of Margaret Ternes and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney.

Trees New York is an environmental and urban forestry nonprofit organization. Its mission is to plant, preserve and protect New York City's urban forest through education, active citizen participation and advocacy. TreesNY was founded in 1976 as a volunteer response to New York City's devastating cutbacks in forestry and tree-related community services.

TreesNY has 35 years of experience in large-scale tree planting projects, tree care management and consulting and stewardship training projects to teach members of NYC's communities to care for the urban forest. Since its founding, TreesNY has trained over 11,500 adults and 6,000 youth in tree care and stewardship. Since 2005, TreesNY has planted over 2,800 trees in underserved communities throughout New York City. For over three decades, TreesNY has been at the forefront of environmental advocacy in New York City.

On April 10th, Joyce Theater Foundation celebrated its second annual gala performance at the David H. Koch Theater honoring Paige Royer and Kerry Clayton and Michèle and Steve Pesner.

A gala dinner followed the performance in the The David H. Koch Theater, which included the New York premiere of "Charter," set to live music by the Nicholas Payton Quartet, and performed by Wendy Whelan and Desmond Richardson; choreographed by Dwight Rhoden. The Atlantic-crossing quartet of dancers from L'Opera national de Lyon performed Benjamin Millepied's 2009 "Sarabande" danced to extracts from Bach's "Partito" for flute and from the "Sonatas et Parititas" for violin. And a long-time favorite, not seen in New York City for almost a decade, Nederlands Dance Theater concluded the gala performance with a sneak preview of their stunning dancing. The company's choice for the gala only performance was its wonderfully witty "SH-BOOM", choreographed by the company's artistic director Paul Lightfoot and house choreographer Sol Leon.

This past Tuesday night (April 17th), City Harvest held its 19th Annual Evening of Practical Magic at Cipriani 42nd Street. The gala brought out the stars including Richard Gere who offered to cook a meal for the highest bidder at the evening's auction. The winner bid almost $200,000 for Gere's culinary abilities. They honored Chef Marc Murphy of the famous Landmarc restaurants in Tribeca and in the Time Warner complex.

This past Tuesday, April 16th, the highly-anticipated Show House season commenced as the design industry's elite took their seats at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club's annual President's Dinner. Held at New York's Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the black tie event, hosted by Architectural Digest was chaired by Editor-in-Chief Margaret Russell and celebrated designer Bunny Williams. As a prelude to Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club's largest fundraising event of the year, the Decorator Show House, the President's Dinner raises money to provide more than 12,000 young people at ten locations throughout the Bronx with essential after-school and enrichment programs. The internationally recognized Kips Bay Show House invites the country's premier interior decorators to transform a luxury Manhattan residence into a month-long exhibition of awe-inspiring design, attracting more than 20,000 visitors each year. This year's Show House will take residence at the Sharp Townhouse, located at 161 East 64th Street, and will be transformed by some of the nation's most acclaimed designers.

On Wednesday, April 3, 2013, the Young New Yorkers for the Fight Against Parkinson’s committee and the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF) held its sixth annual Celebrate Spring New York at LAVO located at 39 East 58th Street in New York City. More than 350 supporters of Young New Yorkers and the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation raised over $80,000. Proceeds from the evening will benefit PDF’s Côté Clinical Genetics Initiative, which supports research to identify and understand the role of genetic markers in Parkinson’s disease.

Celebrate Spring New York was first conceived six years ago by G. Pennington Egbert III, his sister Missy Egbert Sheehan and their close friend Georgina B. Schaeffer. The three, whose fathers both lived with Parkinson’s disease, joined together to create the Young New Yorkers for the Fight Against Parkinson’s committee, a group of nearly 100 New Yorkers dedicated to advancing a cure for Parkinson’s. Each year the committee hosts Celebrate Spring New York, which has raised nearly $500,000 since its inception.

The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation supports research and ideas that will improve the lives and futures of people touched by Parkinson’s. Created by William Black, the founder of Chock full o’Nuts, a successful New York coffee and restaurant business, PDF was the first national not-for-profit organization to focus on Parkinson’s disease. Since its founding in 1957, PDF has invested $96 million in the research of leading scientists around the world and has committed an additional $40 million to support education and advocacy programs.

Last Thursday, the American Museum of Natural History held its 2013 Museum Dance. The theme of the evening was Under the Sea, in honor of the Museum's upcoming exhibition Whales: Giants of the Deep. As New York City's longest-running junior benefit, the Museum Dance brings together influential young philanthropists to celebrate and raise essential funds for the Museum's scientific and educational programs, which enable thousands of underserved New York City school children to visit the Museum annually.

The event began with an intimate dinner and dessert followed by dancing for all. Music was provided by DJ Jus-Ske. Throughout the evening, there was a silent auction with luxury items from many of New York's most exclusive retailers including trips to Little Nell at Aspen, Miami, and Beaver Creek; NYC experience's to Bravo TV's Watch What Happens Live, Barry's Bootcamp, and Pure Yoga; handbags from Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, and Roberto Cavalli; and jewelry from Fred Leighton, Ippolita, and Kwiat. On April 3, American Friends of the Louvre and the Consulate General of France welcomed more than 100 guests at a reception in celebration of Henri Loyrette's accomplishments during his twelve year tenure as President-Director at the Musée du Louvre. His Excellency François Delattre, Ambassador of France to the United States, made remarks outlining the many projects which Mr. Loyrette brought to fruition while at the helm of the world's most visited museum.

Christopher Forbes, Chairman of American Friends of the Louvre, gave personal reminiscences on his friendship with Mr. Loyrette since the organization was founded in 2004. Mr. Loyrette then spoke with great affection of his years at the Louvre including his great enjoyment of the many partnerships with American institutions. He also warmly thanked the board members of American Friends of the Louvre and the many members and donors present for their generous support of Louvre projects and initiatives. Philippe de Montebello spoke briefly regarding the subtle but meaningful curatorial changes Mr. Loyrette had made within the galleries of the Louvre, shedding new light on the collection.

The scene at The Breast Cancer Research Foundation's annual Hot Pink Party, ¡Viva Fiesta!

On Wednesday, April 17th, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) hosted its annual Hot Pink Party at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York City, raising more than $5.2 million for lifesaving breast cancer research funding and awareness. This year’s event, themed ¡Viva Fiesta!, was emceed by British beauty and devoted breast cancer awareness advocate, Elizabeth Hurley, and featured a performance by Multi-Grammy Award-winning artist Sir Elton John. Kay Krill, President and CEO of ANN INC., was honored for her outstanding leadership in the fight against breast cancer with the Foundation’s Sandra Taub Humanitarian Award. BCRF bestows this annual Humanitarian Award to recipients who have demonstrated a unique passion for the cause through their work, inspirational courage or individual commitment.

Kate Hudson, award-winning actress and Ann Taylor brand ambassador, presented the distinguished award to Krill at the Foundation’s cornerstone charity event. “As Ann Taylor Ambassador, I am honored to present Kay Krill with the Sandra Taub Humanitarian Award for her incredible work and dedication to fighting breast cancer,” said Hudson during her speech. She added, “Breast cancer has touched people close to me as it has touched the lives of so many of us, so I want to personally thank BCRF for helping to put an end to this devastating disease. Approximately every 13 minutes a woman will die of breast cancer. We must change this, and together, with The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, we will.”

Also in attendance were long-time Breast Cancer Research Foundation supporters and dear friends of the Foundation’s late Founder Evelyn Lauder, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Vera Wang, and Tory Burch, among many others. During the course of the evening, dedicated and longtime BCRF donor, Judith Schlager, was presented the Roz and Les Goldstein Unsung Hero Award in recognition of her work of helping others cope with a breast cancer diagnosis. Schlager, also a breast cancer survivor, has played a pivotal role in BCRF’s goal to broaden its national reach. Sandra Krakoff, a fellow member of BCRF’s Advisory Board, presented the award.

The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC), the world's first child protection agency, held its annual Spring Luncheon on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at The Pierre Hotel in Manhattan. The afternoon featured a keynote address by child advocate Elizabeth Smart. The kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart was one of the most followed child abduction cases of our time. This traumatic experience led Elizabeth to create her own foundation that has allowed her to become an influential advocate for change related to child safety. Elizabeth's compelling story continues to inspire children who have gone through similar experiences to not give up and know that there is life after tragic events.

Dr. Mary Pulido, Executive Director of the NYSPCC, spoke about the mission of the NYSPCC, and the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Elizabeth Mayhew and Valesca Guerrand-Hermes served as event co-chairs. The afternoon raised more than $150,000 for the agency's Trauma Recovery Program. 250 guests were in attendance.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Luncheon program included important steps to recognize child abuse, take action if it is suspected, and most importantly, how to prevent it.

On Monday, April 15, National Book Award winning author Andrew Solomon joined Jeffrey A. Lieberman, MD, Chairman of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, and returning Mistress of Ceremonies Donna Hanover at the Gray Matters at Columbia Spring Benefit Luncheon at The Plaza Hotel. The sold-out crowd of over 450 guests raised $450,000.

Gray Matters at Columbia is a research fellowship fund that was launched in 2007 to support brain research in an effort to help solve the mystery of serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and autism. The annual luncheon was inspired by a mother who lost her son to suicide after a long and difficult struggle with schizophrenia, and is a beacon of hope to all who struggle with brain disorders.

The 14th Annual Spring Luncheon, presented by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), took place on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Cipriani 42nd Street. More than 650 supporters attended the event, which raised more than $1 million – a record for the event. All proceeds will benefit FARE, a national nonprofit organization with the mission of ensuring the safety and inclusion of individuals with food allergies while relentlessly seeking a cure. FARE was founded as a result of the 2012 merger between the nation’s leading food allergy organizations, the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) and the Food Allergy Initiative (FAI), which had sponsored the Luncheon since 1999.

This past Wednesday, the American Museum of Natural History held its 23rd Annual Spring Environmental Lecture and Luncheon, Islands in a Changing World: Resilience and Recovery.

Lynn Sherr moderated a panel discussion between Philip Kramer, Seth W. Pinsky, and Stuart Gaffin which focused on island ecosystems as they face increasing environmental threats. Ranging from oceanic islands to New York City and surrounding areas after Hurricane Sandy, the panelists explored the resilience and recovery of these environments in a world of change.

Philip Kramer serves as director of The Nature Conservancy's Caribbean Program. Based in the Florida Keys office, Dr. Kramer is responsible for developing and implementing the strategic vision and management of the Conservancy's initiatives throughout the Caribbean.

Seth W. Pinsky is president of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (appointed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2008). In December 2012, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Bloomberg appointed Seth to lead the City's Special Initiative for Rebuilding and Resiliency (SIRR).

Stuart Gaffin is a research scientist at the Center for Climate Systems Research at Columbia University. His areas of research include projections of New York City regional climate impacts, including temperature, precipitation, extreme events, and sea level rise; the urban heat island effect and the role of urban vegetation and high albedo surfaces as mitigation strategies; and greenhouse gas emissions scenarios and their relation to air pollution and regional population changes.

On Saturday afternoon, April 20th, LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton held its much-anticipated opening day celebration RITES of SPRING.

The season-opening exhibit Roots of MODERN, featuring pieces from the LongHouse Reserve collection, (now through July 13) presents an illuminating look at non-Western art and irregular beauty that incited and inspired modern European art and architecture. The exhibition brings together a wide variety of non-traditional influences, and non-European works—from East Asian ceramics to Native American fabrics and basketry to African and Oceanic furniture, textiles, and masks—from a period of over 5,000 years.

The Black & White exhibit by Jack Youngerman (now through October 12) presents a series of seven black and white cast fiberglass sculptures that were created in the 1980s in Bridgehampton, where Youngerman has had a studio since 1968. The sculptures derive from the transformation of a flat rectangle into compound curving forms, and are inspired by the South Fork dunes, waves, wings and leaves.

A new installation by Japanese artist Atuya Tominaga, entitled Ninguen, has strengthened the collection with a group of pieces carved out of travertine stone and resembling ancient pillars. The artwork is a joint gift from Mr. Tominaga, who was onsite with his wife Mayumi Tominaga, and the Ippodo Gallery in New York.

On Monday, April 22, 2013 The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center hosted its 6th Annual Spring Ball along with Harry Winston, Inc. at The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This exuberant evening is The Society’s signature annual event, which featured cocktails, dinner and dancing, plus a special performance by multiple Grammy award-winning artist Diana Krall. The event was Co-Chaired by Shelley Carr, Julia Koch and Karen LeFrak and was generously sponsored by Harry Winston, Inc.

With 400 guests in attendance, Dr. Annette Rickel, President of The Society, welcomed the prominent crowd of The Society’s members and leaders in business, fashion, music and philanthropy. The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing was transformed into a spectacular stage surrounded by hundreds of glimmering candles. This stunning backdrop set the stage for a poignant evening where MSKCC’s Dr. Robert Motzer, introduced The Society’s latest Kidney Cancer Initiative. The Society also honored Muffie Potter Aston, Tory Burch, Jamie Tisch and Caryn Zucker with the Service Award for their continued commitment and support to The Society and its programs. Sotheby’s Auctioneer and MSKCC Board Member Jamie Niven led a pledge to raise critical funding for research. Overall, this grand affair raised $1.5 million to benefit The Society’s comprehensive patient care, research, and education programs. Following dinner, guests hit the dance floor to music by DJ D-Nice late into the night.

A 43-year veteran of the NYPD, Commissioner Kelly has served in 25 different commands, including twice as Police Commissioner of the City of New York – under Mayor David Dinkins and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Under his leadership, the NYPD became the first municipal police department in the country to develop its own counterterrorism bureau and global intelligence program. He established a Real Time Crime Center that uses data mining to search millions of computer records. Despite dedicating extensive resources to preventing another terrorist attack, the NYPD has driven crime down by 32%.

New York City's Police Athletic League is the first and finest civilian-run PAL in the country. Founded in 1914, PAL has served the city's young people for 99 years. On April 18, alumnae and friends of Barnard College gathered at New York's historic Plaza Hotel for the Annual Gala, a dinner and auction to benefit the College's financial aid program. The event honored recipients of the Frederick A.P. Barnard Award: Connie '53 and Harvey Krueger and the Krueger Family, and Claire and Leonard Tow, Emily Tow Jackson'88 and the Tow Foundation. Benjamin Doller of Sotheby's served as auctioneer. The event raised close to $2.3 million for scholarship aid.

Scholarship aid is tremendously important to Barnard, and a wonderful example of how generations of alumnae, families, and friends show their support for today's young women and the future of the College, and said Barnard President Debora L. Spar.

The Annual Gala is instrumental in upholding Barnard's commitment to educating talented young women regardless of their financial means,and said Nanette M. Following the Annual Gala, the evening continued with the second annual Gala Nights, an initiative founded and spearheaded by a committee of socially engaged young alumnae. Also in support of scholarships, the goal of this soiree is to encourage young professionals to support current students, give back to their college and community, and participate in the New York philanthropic scene.

The fireworks display in Central Park was enjoyed by nearly 1,500 guests from their hosts' windows at "Central to Spring: Cocktails on the Park" to benefit the Central Park Conservancy.

To show their love of Central Park and welcome spring to their beloved backyard, more than 70 Park neighbors hosted cocktail parties in their fabulous homes as part of an April event called Central to Spring, encouraging their friends and neighbors to support the Central Park Conservancy's mission of restoration, maintenance, and enhancement of Central Park.

At 7:45 p.m., a fireworks display from Cherry Hill (mid-Park at 72nd Street) was enjoyed by nearly 1,500 party guests from their hosts' windows.

Central Park is a backyard for all New Yorkers – and especially for the people whose homes are on its perimeter. With views of the Park's rolling meadows, water bodies and trees through living room windows, Central Park's neighbors are just steps from one of the most extraordinary urban parks in the world.

If the Park is New Yorkers' shared backyard, the Conservancy is the organization that guarantees it's the backyard New Yorkers deserve, all year long. Yet only 15 percent of the people who live within a five-minute walk of Central Park actively support the Conservancy's work.

Not even a few April showers could dampen the spirits of the crowd that gathered last Thursday evening at Scully and Scully to celebrate the blooming of Park Avenue tulips. Each spring Michael Scully, President of Scully and Scully, hosts a reception at his chic Park Avenue shop to coincide with this eagerly anticipated spring ritual. The tulips, along with all of the planting and maintenance that takes place on the Park Avenue malls, is made possible by the annual contributions from the community to The Fund for Park Avenue.

Music from Alex Donner Orchestras filled the rooms, home-made hors d'oeuvres were passed by members of the Scully and Scully team, bowls of Eleni's red tulip cookies were there for the taking and real red tulips were in vases throughout the store. The highlight of the evening was a short performance by ten year-old, Sadie Sink, one of the members of the cast of the hit Broadway musical, Annie. As Barbara McLaughlin, explained, "Our red tulips caught the eye of the producers of Annie and the cast is now proudly supporting The Fund and our work. We're thrilled to have Sadie bring a little Broadway to Park Avenue!"

The Horticultural Society of New York held their 16th Annual New York Flower Show Dinner Dance on April 23rd, 2013 at The Altman Building.

The evening honored Charles Masson of La Grenouille, and Hunt Slonem, internationally-renowned American painter. The event also featured, as is its tradition, extraordinary floral tablescape designs from New York City's leading designers, including Laura Clare, Gramercy Park Flower Shop, Michael Aram, Rachel Cho, Renny & Reed, Zak Events, and more. On Thursday, April 25, 2013, The New York Botanical Garden hosted the Garden Sculpture and Antiques Fair: 1750-2013 Preview Party and Collectors’ Plant Sale. Previously named the Antique Garden Furniture Show, the Preview Party and Collectors’ Plant sale took place in the Conservatory Tent, adjacent to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory at The New York Botanical Garden.

More than 500 guests from the philanthropic, design, architecture and art worlds gathered to view and purchase unique and highly coveted statues, urns, garden benches by more than 30 of the nation’s leading experts in garden antiques and ornaments before the Fair officially opened to the public on April 26.

This year, the Fair’s scope was expanded to include contemporary sculpture and furniture. With this extension of contemporary dates, the Fair also introduced contemporary artists for the first time including Michael Fogg, Tom Gottsleben, John Hardacre, C.A. Johnson, Jeff Kahn, and Kim Dickey, daughter of garden designer and author Paige Dickey.

The evening included a silent auction of one-of-a-kind plants, jewelry, garden décor, and other select items. Attendees were also able to meet two authors, Carolyne Roehm of Flowers and Jack Staub of Private Edens: Beautiful Country Gardens, who were signing copies of their newly released books. The Preview Party and Collectors’ Plant Sale raised $400,000 and was underwritten in part by Adam R. Rose and Peter R. McQuillan, with additional support from Mish New York, Mr. and Mrs. Coleman P. Burke, and it was sponsored by 1st Dibs.

Proceeds from the event directly supports the work of the curators and gardeners who are responsible for making The New York Botanical Garden one of the most important horticultural showplaces in the world. The Preview Party and Collectors’ Plant Sale was the opening celebration to kick-off a weekend of exciting Garden festivities.

On Monday, April 15, the Central Park Conservancy welcomed a prominent guest list of socials and corporate leaders to the Taste of Summer Kick-off Party at Bill's Food & Drink on 54th and Madison. Sponsored by Macquarie this year, the annual fundraising celebration in Central Park will take place on June 19. The 31st annual Frederick Law Olmsted Awards Luncheon, hosted by the Women's Committee of the Central Park Conservancy, was held yesterday in a tent set up in the Conservatory Garden. Known as the Hat Luncheon, this festive affair is a major fundraiser for the Women's Committee. Their funds go mainly toward maintenance of the Park. They raised a record $3.3 million yesterday. Jenny and John Paulson were honored from the Paulson's pledge of $100 millioin to the Conservancy. There were 1300 guests, a record number. It is the most popular and sought after ticket on the Spring luncheon calendar in New York.

Last Wednesday night a week, the Versailles Foundation, Inc./Claude Monet Giverny held its annual fundraising dinner at the Cotillion Room of the Pierre. The proceeds from the evening will go to support the Statues Restoration Campaign in the Parc of the Chateau de Versailles. The foundation’s supporters have financed the recently completed the restoration of the statue Leucothee (1687) by Joseph Rayol who lived in the time of Louis XIV–1655-1718.

This year ths Foundation is restoring Claude Monet’s 18th-century cylindrical desk and commode in his bedroom at Giverny. Also, at Monticello, they have commissioned the design and the “Petit Point” embroidery for Thomas Jefferson’s 18th-century Georges Jacob chairs.

The annual dinner always features a guest speaker who belongs to a European royal family, as well as Russian royals. Almost all are descendents or children of deposed monarchs. Queen Elizabeth’s son, the Earl of Wessex has been a guest speaker twice. All of the guest speakers are interesting for their historical backgrounds and knowledge, much of it more intimate than published history, and sometimes more insightful. But many are also interesting for their interest and focus on the issues of their native lands and how to solve them. Their non-political positions are taken for granted yet their patriotism is deeply committed, and often greater than many of their national compatriots.

This year’s guest was Her Royal Highness, The Crown Princess Margarita of Romania and her husband Prince Radu. Princess Margarita is the daughter of King Michael I. Michael who was born in 1921 was King from 1927 to 1930 and again from September 1940 through December 1947 when he was forced by the Communist Party of Romania to abdicate. A great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria, he is a third cousin of Queen Elizabeth II.

In 1997, Michael officially made his eldest daughter Margarita the Crown Princess of Romania, Custodian of the Romanian Crown and his heir presumptive. Romania is no longer a monarchy but after the breakup of the Soviet Union and the downfall of Ceausescu, the royal family was allowed to return. Princess Margartia – who was born in Lausanne and grew up in England and went to university in Scotland – has taken up residence there. She and her husband have devoted themselves to assisting the many orphans created during and after by the World Wars and brutality of the so-called victors, the Nazis and then the Communists.

More than 300 guests attended the annual Pratt Institute Art of Packaging Award Gala at a private club in Manhattan on April 30, 2013. The gala, which attracts the top-tier of New York City's multi-billion dollar cosmetics industry, supports the Marc Rosen Scholarship and Education Fund for Packaging by Design and raises scholarship funds for graduating package design students at Pratt. It is the only scholarship in the world available to college students looking to pursue careers in cosmetics and package design. The glamorous black-tie event raised $350,000 in 2013 and has raised more than $3.5 million over the last 24 years.

The Art of Packaging Award, which is presented each year to a beauty/cosmetics company that has excelled in the art form, was awarded to the Aramis & Designer Fragrances division of The Estée Lauder Companies. At Pratt, Rosen teaches a course on cosmetic and fragrance package design, which is the only one of its kind in the world. As part of the course, students select a floral, green, or Oriental fragrance. They name the fragrance and design a perfume bottle from sketch to clay form to prototype along with a scent card, box, shopping bag, and advertisement. This year's student scholarship winners include:

• Kyle Calvert (Illinois): Calvert designed a modern, oval-shaped bottle using silver and pink for a calming floral scent that he named "Serene."

• Vivi Feng (China): Feng's scent, which she named "Vertigo," was influenced by the mystery and allure of the classic Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name and Art Deco style; the bottle was a faceted design inspired by origami.

•Alexandra Haime (Florida): Haime's work -- for an Oriental scent she named "Kahlia"-- was inspired by the idea of clarity and replicated the form of natural quartz crystal.

• Kashfia Rahman (Bangladesh): Rahman chose a green scent, which she named "Belle Journee," and utilized a green leaf motif that translated the light scent into a graceful design.

On April 23rd, The Queen Elizabeth II Garden held its annual gala dinner at Gotham Hall.

The creation of the Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden, in the heart of Lower Manhattan, was prompted by a desire to honor and memorialize the 67 British subjects who lost their lives in the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001. In 2002, the St. George's Society, under the then presidency of William R. Miller, CBE, embraced the idea of creating a permanent garden memorial.

The Garden is administered by the British Memorial Garden Trust, Inc., a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization founded by the British Consulate and the St. George's Society.

Arts’ Night Out, a festive celebration of the Spring Show NYC.

Last Friday night, over 1,000 young patrons from the city’s top cultural institutions packed the Park Avenue Armory for the Arts’ Night Out, a festive celebration of the Spring Show NYC, co-chaired Emily Collins, Abigail Starliper, Maggie Moore, and Lydia Melamed Johnson. They created this evening to introduce their generation to the joys of collecting. So, in addition to mixing and mingling, they can visit the individual booths, where the dealers give a brief talk about their particular specialty.

The Storefront Choir

WABC reporter Kemberly Richardson was emcee for the benefit, which included dinner, dancing and a live auction with Christie’s auctioneer Lydia Fenet. A highlight of the evening was a performance by the Storefront Choir. Students were also on hand during the cocktail hour to speak to guests about programs at the school. The evening raised over a million dollars to benefit the Storefront.

The Children's Storefront is an independent, tuition-free school in Harlem committed to providing a comprehensive education to children with varied academic strengths from preschool through eighth grade. On Friday night, April 26, Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway swept into town to lend her presence to The American-Scandinavian Foundation’s Spring Gala.

Best known to New Yorkers for Scandinavia House, its gleaming headquarters on Park Avenue and 38th Street, The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) promotes international understanding through its many programs and cultural exchanges. Queen Sonja on Thursday night had formally opened the current exhibition at Scandinavia House, MUNCH | WARHOL and the Multiple Image.

Some 360 guests from around the world assembled in the Grand Ballroom of The Pierre to celebrate the best of American and Norwegian art and culture, among them Inger and William B. Ginsberg, Hon. Charles and Monika Heimbold, Lise Stolt-Nielsen, Richard E. Oldenburg, Mildred Brinn, Arthur Zeckendorf, Inger Elliott, Lena Kaplan, Hon. and Mrs. John L. The 2013 Awards Ceremony was the centerpiece of the evening, with the ASF Cultural Award going to James Rosenquist, the internationally-acclaimed American artist of Norwegian and Swedish heritage. The Foundation’s Gold Medal was awarded to The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in recognition of its far-reaching efforts to increase the awareness and appreciation of the art and design of the Nordic countries.

More than a decade has elapsed since Peter P. Blanchard III and his wife Sofia set out to follow Peter’s father’s wishes to convert the family estate, Greenwood Gardens, into a public ornamental garden and conservation center.

The good news is that, as of this month, the gates of the century-old private estate garden, located astride a ridge above Short Hills, New Jersey, are indeed open to the public.

Cocktails were served on an overlook terrace, between a pair of wooden pergolas,

Peter and Sofia welcomed more than a hundred friends and supporters to a gala dinner in late April in order to say ‘thank you.’ Any one of the attendees could have been forgiven for thinking that they’d been magically transported on a bright spring evening to a mountaintop in Italy.

Cocktails were served on an overlook terrace, between a pair of wooden pergolas, and inside a simple white tent, long communal tables were laid with freshly cut ranunculus, deep pink bougainvillea, vivid fuchsia, and red, purple and blue sweet peas. In lieu of place cards, tiny pots with herbs ran down the tables.

Adelaide Childs Frick, Peter Blanchard’s mother, had played an important role in reviving Greenwood Gardens in the 1950s—no doubt inspired by the formal gardens she had known as a child growing up on Long Island.

New York City-based 14+ Foundation’s co-founder, Joseph Mizzi, enlisted friends Vito Schnabel and Jeff Zalaznick for a special event at Jeff’s newly opened Carbone on Monday, April 22nd for Mizzi’s charity that supports children’s education in Africa.

14+ Foundation is a NYC-based charitable organization formed in 2012 to develop and build schools and orphanages for African children in rural communities. All proceeds from the benefit will support the Chipakata Children’s Academy in Zambia, Africa, the first school created by the 14+ Foundation, which is breaking ground next month.

The current site plans for a school, orphanage and community facility spread over 200 acres of land, which allows for farming and other agricultural activities as a means of long term sustainability.

Over 1,200 leaders, staff, and friends of The Mount Sinai Medical Center gathered on Thursday, May 2nd for the 28th annual Crystal Party at the Central Park Conservatory Garden. The event celebrated a year of many milestones for Mount Sinai.

The celebration was hosted by Mount Sinai Trustee Eric Lane and his wife Sarah, who co-chaired the evening event.

"Thanks to their stewardship of this extraordinary event, over $3.2 million has been raised for Mount Sinai," said Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Mount Sinai Medical Center. "And we mark the beginning of a new era for our medical school now named the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai," said Dr. Davis.

Among this year's milestones are the opening of the Leon and Norma Hess Center for Science and Medicine, a 500,000 square foot, state of the art research center, and an adjacent mixed-use tower for residents as well as clinicians and patients.
"Both of these properties generated much-needed jobs during economically uncertain times, and will continue to do so as the labs and clinical facilities are opened and expand," said Peter W. May, Chair of The Mount Sinai Boards of Trustees.

Mr. May also thanked James and Merryl Tisch for their leadership of Mount Sinai's capital campaign which will have raised over $1.4 billion by the time it concludes in 2013.

On Wednesday, May 1, the Financial Times hosted a 125th anniversary party at a mansion in New York to celebrate the news organization's milestone year. A week ago, Thursday, Hofstra University held its annual Hofstra Gala at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, North Campus. They honored Dr. Lawrence Herbert'51. Lawrence Herbert is the inventor of the Pantone Matching System and former chairman and CEO of Pantone, Inc. Graduating from Hofstra in 1951, Dr. Herbert went to work for Pantone as a color matcher. Six years later he bought the company. The following year he invented the Pantone Matching System, which revolutionized the commercial and domestic applications of color and revolutionized the industry.

The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC), the world’s first child protection agency, held its Annual Junior Committee Spring Benefit “Savor Our City” on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Asellina at The Gansevoort Park Hotel on Park Avenue. The evening featured cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres, along with a silent auction of highly covetable items and experiences. Exhale Mind Body Spa was the corporate sponsor. There were 185 guests in attendance, and the event raised more than $47,000 for The NYSPCC’s Trauma Recovery Program.

Over 250 cases of child abuse are reported every day in New York City – and that is only what is reported. In response to this daunting issue, The NYSPCC’s set of young philanthropists assume social responsibility each year to raise essential funds for the efforts of the agency: helping children heal from abuse and neglect, and helping families grow stronger. The Junior Committee of The NYSPCC has been supporting the efforts of the agency since 2005.

Each year, the City of Hope East End Chapter/Jeanne Kaye League of New York City presents the Spirit of Life® Award to individuals who represent all that embodies hope and whose professional and humanitarian accomplishments are worthy of celebration. This year, fashion designer and colon cancer survivor, Carmen Marc Valvo, and author, television health correspondent and psychiatry professor, Dr. Georgia Witkin, received the 2013 Spirit of Life® Award at City of Hope's luncheon on Tuesday, May 7, at The Plaza Hotel.

Valvo, who has outfitted celebrity royalty including Beyonce, Queen Latifah, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, featured his latest designs in the fashion show presentation at this year's luncheon. Outside of fashion, Valvo has also been active in raising awareness about colon cancer and is additionally donating all proceeds from his book "Dressed to Perfection, The Art of Dressing for Your Red Carpet Moments" to colon cancer research. "City of Hope is leading the way in research, treatment and education in order to save more lives and I am honored to support an organization that improves the quality of life for patients with cancer and their families, and said Valvo.

The annual event is produced each year to raise funds to ensure the McCarton Foundation’s continued success in educating young people on the autistic spectrum.
